Melbourne
There is a thriving live classical music scene in Melbourne, which is part of the reason I moved here (actually it's most of the reason). This page lists important concerts and events that shouldn't be missed.
May 2006
25 May 2006, MSO with Nikolaj Znaider (violin), Korngold Violin Concerto
Nikolaj Znaider is one of the most exciting young violinists around. I first saw him in New Zealand playing the Saint-Saëns and Sibelius violin concertos in 2000. Those two performances were simply the best concerts I've ever been too, better than Bryn Terfel, Janos Starker, Lynn Harrel.... I could go on and on, don't miss this.
July 2006
9 & 10 July 2006, ACO with Anthony Marwood (violin), Barber, Mendelssohn and Beethoven
Any concert the ACO do is worth attending. They are one of the most innovative and successful ensembles around today. If you've ever wanted to subscribe to a concert season make it the ACO (it really is a good idea as their concerts usually sell out).
August 2006
6 & 7 August 2006, ACO with Teddy Tahu Rhodes (Baritone) and Emma-Jane Murphy (Cello)
Teddy Rhodes follows a long line of great singers to come out of New Zealand (which unfortunately didn't include me). Emma-Jane Murphy is an outstanding cellist and principal of the ACO. She also has the rare distinction of sharing a teacher with me; Coral Bognuda (retired cello lecturer at Auckland University)
